As a long-term supporter of Barnardo’s work, Anita was delighted to be appointed Honorary Chair of the charity’s Female Genital Mutilation Appeal in 2017. Led by the National FGM centre, the campaign aimed to protect at-risk children and support those affected by FGM, breast flattening and child abuse linked to faith or belief. Delighted by the opportunity to action real change, Anita set about raising funds and awareness of this devastating traditional practice within British communities.

As a result of Anita’s work with Barnardo’s, over 500 vulnerable children have now received help concerning fears of child abuse linked to faith or belief. More than 350 women survivors have accessed support, and 22 girls at risk of FGM have received direct protection orders.
Her efforts also led to the recruitment of the first-ever FGM social workers and the training of 3,500 agency professionals. These specialists work with schools throughout the UK to educate teachers on FGM practices, raise awareness within communities and safeguard vulnerable children.
Now Vice President of the charity, Anita continues to support Barnardo’s on their mission to help families and young people across the UK.
